Private Die Proprietary Stamps
Private die proprietary revenue stamps were adhesive tax stamps produced by private manufacturers in the United States under government authorization. These stamps were primarily used between 1862 and 1883, with a brief resurgence from 1898 to 1901 during the Spanish–American War. Manufacturers were permitted to design and fund the production of their own distinctive stamps to indicate the payment of taxes on proprietary goods such as patent medicines, matches, perfumes, and playing cards. In return, they received a discount on the tax. The government approved the designs and printing, but the cost was borne by the companies. These stamps served both as proof of tax payment and as a form of branding for the companies' products. The use of private die proprietary stamps was discontinued after June 30, 1901, when the tax expired.

Condition
Private Die Proprietary Stamps, which most collectors refer to as Match and Medicine stamps, were most often torn or otherwise damaged when the box or container the stamp was afixed to was opened. Scott Catalog prices the stamps assuming they are somewhat faulty and in Fine-Very Fine (F/VF) condition. Faults such as small tears, pinholes, thins, etc. are common, but should not be readily apparent on the face of the stamp. Ordinary stamps usually sell for full catalog price or better. Stamps that are sound (fault free) and/or that are nicely centered (grade better than FVF) frequently sell for several times the stated catalog price.

Paper Types
Private Die Propriety Stamps are found on five paper types (the letter in the catalog number):
"a" Old Paper, (1862 to 1871)
"b" Silk Paper, (1871 to 1877)
"c" Pink Paper, (1877 to 1878)
"d" Watermarked Paper, (1878-1883)
"e" Experimental Silk paper
