Kuwaiti Postal History Began with Camel Service

Explore the rich postal history of Kuwait through its captivating stamps. Dating back to around 1775, when the East India Company established an overland camel service from the Persian Gulf to Aleppo and Constantinople, Kuwait’s postal journey has been fascinating. After a treaty with the British in 1899, the first dedicated post office opened in 1915, using Indian stamps with “KUWAIT” overprints. British administration followed, with overprinted British stamps until 1959 when Kuwait took control. The 1959 stamps, featuring Sheik 'Abd Allah III al-Salim al-Sabah and oil-related scenes, marked Kuwait’s independence. Subsequent issues incorporated both English and Arabic text, reflecting the country’s cultural heritage.
