Issued in 1920 for a plebiscite supervised by the League of Nations, the stamps of Allenstein reflect a brief moment of geopolitical transition following World War I. Voters in this East Prussian district were to decide whether to remain with Germany or join Poland. The stamps were overprinted on German issues and used for a short period.
