Collection: US Special Delivery

Special Delivery Service was created by an act of Congress on Mary 3, 1885 and began operation on October 1 of that year. Originally limited to post offices in towns with populations of 4,000 or more, the service expanded nationwide to all post offices on August 4, 1886.

Special Delivery paid for later than normal daytime and evening delivery. his meant letters bearing a Special Delivery stamp were prioritized ahead of standard mail and delivered immediately upon arrival, rather than waiting for the next day’s route.

While the last US special delivery stamp was issued in 1971, the service was officially discontinued 1997, but had in essence been replaced in 1977 when the postal service began it Express Mail service.
