Scarce Bethlehem Christmas Day Souvenir Card with Rare 1/2 mm Overprint.
This souvenir card canceled Dec. 24, 1953 has four Jordanian stamps affixed. Three of stamps on the cover have no significant catalog value (291-292, and 298). But, 297 has a narrow spaced (1/2 mm) overprint (footnote in Scott) and is quite rare. Also, the selection of stamps is quite important. The first 2 commemorate King Hussein's ascension to the throne and the second two show a "United Jordan" with territory on both the East and West Bank of the Jordan River, the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem on the left and Petra on the right. The souvenir card stamps were meant to make a political statement as well as be a nice souvenir. The stamp selection was meant to legitimize Jordan's annexation of Palestine by King Hussein's father King Abdullah I after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war.
