Original RPPC – 1912 Berlin Sightseeing Jitney – Thomas Cook Travel – Weltreisebureau Union – To USA w/ Postage Due

This original real photo postcard (RPPC) captures a rare view of an early sightseeing jitney—a large, open-top motor vehicle used for city tours—parked in front of the Weltreisebureau UNION ("World Travel Bureau") at Unter den Linden 21 in Berlin, Germany. Prominently featured is signage for Thomas Cook & Son, a renowned international travel agency.

Postmarked June 7, 1912 (Berlin NW), the postcard was mailed to Albany, New York and charged postage due on arrival. The reverse bears a strip of four U.S. Scott J38 1¢ postage due stamps, each tied with New York “DUE” cancels, indicating underpayment of international postage.

The photo provides a vivid snapshot of pre-WWI European tourism culture, with well-dressed travelers boarding a luxury motor tour arranged through one of Berlin's leading travel bureaus. Weltreisebureau Union catered to both German and international travelers and partnered with Thomas Cook to organize rail, steamship, and guided city tours—such as the one pictured here.

The postcard is in very fine condition.
