1860s Confederate Manuscript Postal Accounting Slip – Mississippi Route – Signed by W.E. Hamilton

Offered here is an exceptionally scarce surviving example of a small Confederate-era manuscript postal accounting slip, addressed “To Canton, Miss.” and signed by W.E. Hamilton. These small-format slips were used by local postmasters and postal clerks to document short-paid or unpaid letters carried onward to another office. Very few survive today, especially from rural Mississippi during the war years.

The slip is executed entirely in period ink on coarse brown wartime paper. It records an amount “1 unpd 10” and is completed in a clear, attractive hand. Hamilton’s signature appears prominently at the bottom, making this an excellent manuscript example from the Confederate domestic mail system.

Faint Circular Impression Noted

To the right of the destination line appears a faint circular impression. It is not inked and does not match the depth or sharpness of a typical Confederate handstamp, and no lettering can be confidently confirmed. It may represent pressure transfer from another document, an office seal, or an incomplete/dry impression of a postal device. While the exact origin cannot be determined, the presence of a distinct circular mark is worth noting for specialists. (Multiple photos from different angles and lighting, and video are attempts to show this faint impression).

Collector Condition Analysis

The slip remains in very good Confederate manuscript condition for fragile wartime paper. Some natural surface wear, a hole in the center (probably from a spindle file), and light handling marks consistent with its use in the postal system. Ink remains legible throughout. No repairs or modern enhancements. These manuscript postal fragments were often discarded at the receiving office, so survival rates are extremely low.

Historical Context

Canton, Mississippi was a significant postal hub during the war, receiving mail from numerous smaller offices. Manuscript slips like this one served as internal accounting notes documenting unpaid or short-paid letters forwarded to Canton for proper rating. Items associated with identifiable clerks such as W.E. Hamilton are especially desirable for postal history and Confederate manuscript specialists.

A Scarce Confederate Postal Artifact

These small-format manuscript accounting slips rarely appear on the market, and those with readable signatures are even more uncommon. This is an ideal addition for collectors of Confederate postal history, Mississippi postal documents, or manuscript postal ephemera.
